The bond between Johnny Rhodes and Gary Williams is easily understandable. Williams helped Rhodes fulfill a childhood dream that once seemed iffy. Rhodes helped build the Maryland program from the residue of punishment to the realization of promise. As a result, he is the Terrapins' ACC Legend for 2012.

There is no question that the North Carolina Tar Heels are a top-10 team, but they simply aren't playing up to their potential, and it has the potential of burning them come March Madness. On Tuesday, the Tar Heels allowed the North Carolina State Wolfpack to get back into the game in the second quarter. The Wolfpack went on a run to close out the half by driving at the Tar Heels' frontcourt, which is supposed to be their strength. This is all fine...

With Selection Sunday right around the corner, the NCAA March Madness picture is beginning to become clear.  The Tar Heels' ticket to the dance isn’t in question, although it remains to be seen what tournament seed they will be given. After last night's victory over rival North Carolina State, the Tar Heels currently sport a record of 24-4 (11-2 ACC).  As the Tar Heels head into the stretch run of the season, head coach Roy Willia...

With the ACC suddenly looking like it may only be a four-bid conference, the Virginia Cavaliers took a major step toward insuring their name will be called on Selection Sunday with a gutsy, hard-fought, 61-59 win over in-state, arch-rival Virginia Tech. The victory not only avenged UVA's lone home loss to date, it moved them into sole possession of fourth place and a game clear of Miami and NC State, both losers this evening. With Virginia o...

You have to feel a bit bad for State: after the Duke loss, after feeling persecuted in the face of the Karl Hess, they shoot for the moon. They line up a reunion to honor the 1989 team, featuring Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani, whip the crowd to a fever pitch, and hang in there for the first half...all before succumbing, 86-74.

As the NCAA Tournament approaches in 2012, it's always fun to see which teams will play their way into a bid, and which teams will play their way out of the tournament. Last night, Tuesday, February 21, 2012, a lot of teams had chances to really bolster their NCAA Tournament...

In 2011, Maryland finished the season 19-14—a respectable showing in the competitive ACC. After dropping their third contest of the year to Duke in the ACC Tournament, the Terps postseason hopes rested in the hands of the NCAA and NIT selection committees. The NCAA released its field of 68 teams, but Maryland was nowhere to be found. A similar story ensued hours later when the NIT's field of 32 showed no signs of the Terps.Plan C was the CBI...

It was a night of history for Kendall Marshall as UNC won its 12th in a row over N.C. State.

I have followed Virginia Tech sports (football and basketball) for a long time. There have been times when the Hokies have reached their full potential but, as most Hokie fans will tell you, Virginia Tech is a school destined for heartbreak. The football program does this on occasion, like when they outplayed Michigan in the Sugar Bowl but still lost. Beamer will lose some games in this fashion, but the people of Blacksburg know where the real he...

RALEIGH — As Kendall Marshall went through warm-ups and processed the growing scene Tuesday night, the distinct thought formed that maybe this is what it’s like to be considered something of a rock star. “But hated,” he said. “Kind of like...

RALEIGH — After North Carolina State looked like it was going to get run off the court in the first five minutes of Tuesday night’s game against North Carolina, the Wolfpack settled into a comfort zone and pushed back against the No. 7 Tar Heels....

Clemson coach Brad Brownell was hopeful that his team's game at Georgia Tech on Tuesday would create a good vibe for playing at Philips Arena, site of the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament. "If you go somewhere and have a good experience, you don't feel as bad about going there," Brownell said on the eve of his team's first venture into the downtown Atlanta area. "If it doesn't work out real well, you'll probably be a little cautious. Hopefull...

The Demon Deacons have tried a zone defense more often in recent games, and it tends to offer several benefits. Using a lineup that doesn't go deep off the bench, it gives Wake Forest a chance to protect players from foul trouble. It's also a way to conserve energy in certain situations because fatigue could set in on the primary players. "It kind of keeps us from chasing people around so much," coach Jeff Bzdelik said. "It compacts us. It helps...

The Cavaliers can breathe a little easier as they prepare to play host to North Carolina. After holding on to beat Virginia Tech 61-59 in Blacksburg on Tuesday, Saturday's game is not a must-win as far as UVA's NCAA Tournament hopes are concerned. The Cavs, aiming for their first bid to the Big Dance in five years, relied on their defense to split the regular-season series with the Hokies. They held Virginia Tech scoreless for more than eight min...

Three days after their most lopsided loss of the season, the Terrapins rebounded—literally—and picked up a pivotal ACC win over visiting Miami on Tuesday. Maryland (16-11, 6-7) next heads back out on the road for the next two games, starting Saturday at Georgia Tech. The Terrapins, famously, have just one road victory this season in seven tries. After the trip to Tech, Maryland is at seventh-ranked North Carolina on Feb. 29 and then closes ou...

Time is running out for the Yellow Jackets to show they've improved under first-year coach Brian Gregory. They've got three regular-season ACC games left, starting with Saturday's home game against Maryland, plus an expected one-and-done in the conference tournament. Gregory was asked after Tuesday's 56-37 loss to Clemson—the Jackets' lowest scoring output this season—why fans should believe next season will be better. "You can't just take a...

There's a level of mental toughness that the Wolfpack must display in order to move past its recent shortcomings. There's a three-game losing streak and there's no longer the opportunity to reach the 11-win mark in the ACC—that was something coach Mark Gottfried said the Wolfpack would need to be in good shape for at-large consideration for an NCAA Tournament bid. But at 7-6 in the conference, possibilities remain for the Wolfpack, which goes t...

North Carolina has a couple of reasons to be doing some scoreboard-watching as the regular season winds down. Not only are the Tar Heels still embroiled in a three-team race for the ACC championship, they also are trying to remain in the conversation for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Tar Heels should resist that temptation to observe other results because their situation boils down to this: Assuming Carolina can win out in both the reg...

If you wanted to see a microcosm of the Boston College season, all you really had to do was tune in the first half of Sunday night's game against No. 5. The Eagles, playing at home, jumped to a 13-7 lead and were playing well, well enough for the home folks to think there could be a chance of something interesting taking place. But BC then went 9:11 without a point and 14:12 without a field goal, the Eagles trailed by nine at the break and the Bl...

Points are often challenging for No. 25 Virginia to come by, and when that's the case, the Cavaliers are getting used to having one of the nation's best defenses to rely on. When they employ that style to beat Virginia Tech, so much the better for them. For the second game in a row, the Cavaliers (21-6, 8-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) held an opponent scoreless for more than eight minutes in...

Erick Green said the blame was his to shoulder. With the ball in his hands and Virginia Tech trailing No. 25 Virginia 61-59 and the final seconds ticking off the clock, he was supposed to try to win the game for the Hokies. Instead, he passed, and when Dorian Finney-Smith passed, too, Malcolm Brogdon knocked the pass away, grabbed the ball and Virginia escaped Cassell Coliseum with a two-point...

C.J. Leslie got off to such a slow start against rival North Carolina that his coach quickly yanked him from the game. He responded with a performance that might be a sign of further maturation from the talented sophomore. Leslie had a career-high 24 points and 12 rebounds in North Carolina State's 86-74 loss to the No.

The Tar Heels are a talented team with a shocking lack of outside shooting. With just a little three-point touch, they could make a real run through the tournament. They have everything else in place. This team is first in the nation in rebounding, second in scoring and fourth in assists, but they are shooting just 34.7 percent from distance. That cannot continue if they want to be the kings of March Madness. Here are three players that can h...

North Carolina and North Carolina State will go head-to-head for the second time this season, and the Wolfpack are hoping they're able to spoil the fun for the Tar Heels. Earlier this year, North Carolina State feel to North Carolina, 74-55, but this time around, the Wolfpack get to play at home. The Tar Heels are looking to pick up their fourth straight victory and move into sole possession of first place in the ACC. All eyes at North Carolina State's arena once again were on Tom Gugliotta and Chris Corchiani. This time, nobody wanted them to leave. Three days after they were ejected from the stands by an official during a game, Gugliotta and Corchiani returned to the RBC Center to cheers from a passionate fan base that has insisted the players' treatment was unjust.

Who's the cream of the shooting guard crop in the Atlantic Coast Conference? The ACC usually has a wealth of talent—this season is no different. At shooting guard specifically, the talent is pretty deep.Austin Rivers has lit it up in his first (and maybe only) season at Duke, but there some other guys fighting with him to be the best 2-guard in the conference.Let me make this clear: Dexter Strickland probably would have been on my list, but h...

Whether in youth or adulthood, in vehicles or choice of college, Malcolm Mackey knows a good sales pitch when he hears one. And Georgia Tech is especially pleased he recognized one more than 20 years ago.

In 2011, the Big East got a record 11 teams into the NCAA Tournament, and the UConn Huskies were the NCAA Champions. From top to bottom, I think most people would admit that the Big East was the best college basketball conference in the country last season.
