FanTake: Finally, Some Good News For Blue Devils

If you ask Blue Devil fans who won the Duke basketball game on February 8th of this year, I am sure most of them would not even remember who they played. If you tell them that was the day that Austin Rivers hit the big 3 pointer to upset North Carolina, everyone would quickly recall the dramatic ending to that game.  Unfortunately, after that game, Duke fans didn’t have a lot to cheer about.  Sure they won big games against NC State and Florida State down the stretch and ended up with 27 wins, which should not be diminished; but that is where the good news ended for the year.

A series of events over the last several months have sent Duke fans into a state of panic. We all know what happened at the last regular season game at home versus North Carolina, a blowout loss. That was followed up with a loss in the semi –finals of the ACC tournament to Florida State. At least at that point we still had the NCAA tournament to look forward to. Most fans knew the team had some obvious weaknesses but nobody could foresee the historic loss to 15th ranked Lehigh. This was certainly not the kind of history that we normally see from a Coach K team. See more ›

Breaking News: Amile Jefferson to Duke

In a bit of a surprise announcement, Amile Jefferson picked Duke over NC State, Kentucky, Ohio State, and Villanova. Consensus had Jefferson picking NC State, but obviously there was probably too much speculating going on. Read this N&O article for all the details.

Welcome to Duke Amile!

I have a confession to make.  This past season, when we stumbled through the latter half of the schedule, I didn’t wear my Duke necktie when it mattered most.

Allow me to explain.  After the Temple loss, I started wearing a Duke tie on weekday games.  I’m not a superstitious fan or anything, but I felt that they could use the extra mojo.  We as fans all saw a talented team that struggled to find their heart down the stretch.  Make no mistake, we had already won some incredible games (Kansas, Michigan State) but I rarely saw tremendous confidence from our players on the court.  We were good, but not great.  And then we lost to Temple.  So to bring a measure of stability and cast my own vote of confidence after a stunning loss, I started wearing what became my game-day tie.

And it worked! Well, kind of.  Although we went back to winning, uncertainty still hovered over the team.  Every night our effort felt like Forest Gump’s box of chocolates.  Because of this, despite the tie, despite the winning, I wasn’t fully convinced.  I was still waiting for that breakout moment when we would overcome our weaknesses and realize our true potential.  Fellow Duke fans know what I’m talking about.  It’s those moments when players show you an extra level you’ve never seen before and confidence booms through Cameron with every three, dunk, and floor slap.  Jason William’s miracle minute.  Nolan Smith’s junior year.  Brian Zoubek’s 2010 tournament.  When would we see signs of superhuman life in 2012?  I kept wearing the tie and Duke kept winning.  I held out hope. Amile Jefferson’s Decision Could Brighten Duke Fan’s Expectations

This is the last column I will write about Amile Jefferson: I promise.

After Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. the last remaining Duke target in the recruiting class of 2012 will either be a Blue Devil or he won't. If you have read any of my previous columns my expectations and hopes for Jefferson coming to Duke aren't real high. I don't necessarily have a reason other than my gut just tells me this isn't Duke's year to score big in recruiting.

They landed talented guard Rasheed Sulaimon early but have subsequently missed on all of their other primary targets, namely big men and athletic wing players. While Jefferson at 6-foot-8 has the height of a power forward and is listed as such, he is more of a wing forward, but still he is a body Duke could probably use next season given their well documented depth issues.

At this point nobody really seems to have a clue as to what the talented Philadelphia Friends Central High product is going to do. Up until recently many felt that perhaps Kentucky seemed to be the eventual landing spot for Jefferson, especially after talented forward Anthony Bennett dropped or was dropped by the Wildcats.

Up and coming NC State as well as Villanova are also still in the mix, and though most have seemed to rule out hometown Villanova, I'm beginning to wonder if all the additional time Jefferson has taken to decide wasn't just the result of his wanting or contemplating the idea of staying close to home. Amile Jefferson to Announce Decision on Tuesday

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Amile Jefferson is set announce which college he has decided on this coming Tuesday at 4pm EST.   The 6-8 Forward will be deciding between NC State, Duke, Kentucky, Ohio State, and Villanova. However, most recruiting experts think it's really down to Duke and NC State.

Unlike some recruits, Jefferson's delayed decision isn't about hyping himself, but one of a kid who is really trying to find the right school for him. I doubt we will see a Dick Clark Production like we saw with Tony Parker. No word if he will Skyping his decision either.

While I truly hope he picks Duke, if I was forced to say which school he will pick right now, I think NC State may have a slight edge. With his delayed decision, I thought he was seriously considering Kentucky, but the most connected Kentucky fans don't believe Jefferson is taking his talents to Lexington. I hope I'm wrong and he does pick Duke, but regardless of his decision, I wish him well.

FanTake: No Chicken Little Here

Editor's Note: This is the second in hopefully many more FanTakes. If you are interested in writing your own FanTake, please visit this link for more details. The opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the positions of this site.

My high school government teacher always used to say: “If you have two newspapers and one headline says ‘Boy Scout Helps Little Old Lady Across The Street’ and the other states ‘Boys Scout Pushes Little Old Lady Underneath Bus’, which one are you going to buy”? We tend to focus on the negative in society and even with Duke basketball. Although we haven’t had the type of offseason we had hoped, we also need to keep things in perspective.

As Duke Fans we have become very spoiled, but the one constant that we need to remember is that we have a great program (the greatest in my humble, nonpartisan opinion, ok sorry, very partisan) and arguably the best coach of all time, not only in college basketball but Mike Krzyzewski’s name is also mentioned in the greatest coaches of all time, period. Not only that but we will have a senior-laden team this year, and in this day in age of one-and-done college players, I believe it will pay huge dividends. See more ›
