Class of 2017 5-star forward Michael Porter Jr. announced his five finalists in an Instagram post on Monday night and Duke wasn’t one of the schools included on the list.
It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who follows recruiting. Though he holds an offer from the Duke basketball program, the 6’9″, 210-pound forward from Missouri rarely mentioned the Blue Devils in his interviews or blog posts when he’d talk about the schools he’s regularly communicating with and strongly considering.
Naturally, Duke appears to be more focused on Kevin Knox as its top wing target in the 2017 class. Porter is the top ranked small forward in the 247Sports Composite, while Knox is right behind him at No. 2.
Porter’s list is down to Missouri, Washington, Virginia, Indiana and Oklahoma. The Huskies are viewed as the heavy favorite to land him as head coach Lorenzo Romar is his godfather, who also recently hired Porter’s father to be an assistant coach on his staff.
Duke is now officially out of this one, but it’s a formality that everyone saw coming months ago. At this point, it’d be a shock if Porter doesn’t wind up at Washington.
