Although there haven’t been any big announcements, there’s quite a bit to cover in this week’s Duke basketball recruiting roundup.
It’s the time of year when many of the top high school teams and players participate in holiday showcase events, and the light college game schedule provides opportunities for many college coaches to attend the events.
Here are the top headlines from the past week at it relates to players Duke is recruiting.
Many of the nation’s best players will be in Florida over the next week for the City of Palms event, including some of Duke’s key recruiting targets in the classes of 2017, 2018, and 2019. Current Duke commit Wendell Carter will be participating, and hopefully he can do some recruiting when he sees other 2017 targets such as Kevin Knox, Mohamed Bamba, and Trevon Duval. Other players on Duke’s radar who will be in action include Cameron Reddish, Darius Garland, and R.J. Barrett. Learn more about the event with this great preview on FloHoops.
Duke Targets Showcased in ESPN Doubleheader on Thursday
Fans had a chance to catch a few of Duke’s targets in action on Thursday night at the GEICO ESPN High School Basketball Showcase in Indiana, which was televised on ESPN. In the first game, 2018 Duke target Romeo Langford and his New Albany team was blown out by La Lumiere in an 85-63 romp. Langford, the top ranked shooting guard in his class, had some impressive highlights and scored 40 points, but it took 38 shots to get there. In the second part of the doubleheader, 2018 Duke target and top ranked Marvin Bagley helped his Sierra Canyon team knock off Matt Coleman and Oak Hill Academy, giving the Warriors their first loss in over a year. Bagley had a game high 28 points, while Coleman had 13 for Oak Hill.
5-star shooting guard and 2017 Duke commit Gary Trent Jr. has a new post on his USA Today Sports Blog and there are a few notes that should get Blue Devil fans excited. He touches on how much he’s looking forward to playing with Wendell Carter Jr. at Duke and the way the 5-star power forward will be able to dominate in the paint. Trent also mentions his plans of working to continue to get other top prospects like Kevin Knox, Mohamed Bamba, Trevon Duval and Matt Coleman to join him at Duke.
You know you’re doing something impressive when sites like Mashable write an article about your highlight videos. That’s what happened this week with 2018 5-star forward Zion Williamson. The 6’7”, 230-pounder from Spartanburg, S.C., was the subject of piece that featured many of the highlight videos on YouTube that showcase his impressive athleticism. He already holds an offer from Duke, and at this point, the Blue Devils are considered the early favorite to get him.
Duke fans can get to know a little more 2017 point guard Trevon Duval in this recent interview with Evan Daniels of Scout. The 5-star prospect who plays for IMG Academy recently received an offer from the Blue Devils and could be a huge piece in filling the hole at point guard for Duke’s 2017 recruiting class. In the interview, Duval says Duke’s pitch to him has been that the program needs a point guard next season and that he could immediately fill that role.
