The Demon Deacons used a stingy defense and a hard-nosed rushing attack to get a road victory over the Blue Devils, 24-14. True freshman running back Cade Carney had 108 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns to pace Wake. Wake held Duke to 25 rushing yards and their defensive pressure gave Daniel Jones few opportunities to throw downfield. Freshmen kicker AJ Reed missed two FG’s early that really took away Duke’s early momentum, which allowed Wake to stay in the game early.
With that said, this is a transition season for Duke. Gone are the steady veterans in Jeremy Cash, Ross Martin, Will Monday, and even Thomas Sirk to an extent. In their place are young freshmen who are talented, but not quite ready for prime time. With an extremely tough schedule, Duke probably will not go bowling this season.
