Class of 2016 5-star small forward Wenyen Gabriel will be playing his college basketball for John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats.
Gabriel made his announcement on Thursday morning in a video with Adam Finkelstein of ESPN RecruitingNation.
As a 6’9″, 200-pound forward from Wilbraham, Mass., Gabriel rocketed up recruiting boards over the past couple months with his strong play on the Adidas summer circuit, quickly picking up offers from many of the elite programs in college basketball, including Duke and Kentucky. He’s now listed in the 247Sports Composite as the No. 4 power forward and No. 16 overall player in the 247Sports Composite.
We discussed last week that Duke’s interest and subsequent commitment from Javin DeLaurier wouldn’t have any impact on the continued pursuit of Harry Giles, but it could be an indication/factor of how things were progressing with the recruitment of Gabriel.
To be honest, it was always viewed as a long-shot that Duke would be able to get a trio of commitments from Giles, Gabriel, and Marques Bolden. Some people considered Gabriel to be a Maryland lean, but now he’ll join what will likely be another impressive recruiting class for John Calipari. However, Duke is reportedly still in good shape in the recruitments of Harry Giles and Marques Bolden.
Put Gabriel in the category of the few who have passed on the Duke program over the past few years, but the 2016 recruiting class for the Blue Devils still appears to be in excellent shape.
