Ellis is ranked No. 34 overall prospect and the No. 5 combo guard according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.
With Tre Jones returning and Duke signing Cassius Stanley this could have factored into his decision.
UPDATE: Duke has granted his release.
You wonder exactly how much of players’ choices of program hinge on exactly how much playing time they will get, how much national exposure, how much competition with fellow team members? Obviously, this meant everything to Ellis. He was fine when it was just him and Moore. But as more players signed with Duke, Ellis became increasingly nervous. He was not willing to compete with any other guards for minutes. It’s a shame because I suspect, with his long range shooting ability, he would have been highly esteemed by Coach K.
