Traditionally, Duke, Michigan State, Kansas and Kentucky play a doubleheader at the same neutral site location, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced adjustments to the showcase. This season’s Champions Classic was originally planned for the United Center in Chicago.
This season marks the 10th anniversary of the Champions Classic and the Blue Devils’ 6-3 record leads the field. Kentucky is 5-4, Kansas is 4-5 and Michigan State is 3-6. Against the Spartans in the Champions Classic, Duke is 3-0.
In last year’s Champions Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York, Duke knocked off Kansas, 68-66, and Kentucky defeated Michigan State, 69-62.
ESPN also announced Wednesday that the Jimmy V Men’s Classic, set for Wednesday, December 2, with No. 1 Gonzaga vs. No. 12 Tennessee (7 p.m., ESPN) and No. 2 Baylor vs. No. 8 Illinois (10 p.m., ESPN) would also be played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
“ESPN Events is pleased to provide an opportunity for these high-profile programs to compete against one another in the State Farm Champions Classic and Jimmy V Classic as we continue to navigate the unique circumstances surrounding this season,” said Clint Overby, vice president of ESPN Events. “We look forward to safely staging these events and building the momentum for what we hope will be an exciting college basketball season.”
