Duke WBB: Blue Devils Add 6-2 Transfer Sofia Roma from Wagner

Duke University women’s basketball head coach Joanne P. McCallie announced Tuesday the addition of 6-2 forward Sofia Roma, who is transferring from Wagner College. Roma, who is from Richmond Hill, N.Y., will sit out the 2016-17 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules and have two years of eligibility remaining at Duke.

“Sofia is a fierce competitor and rebounder who is not afraid to dictate physical play,” commented McCallie. “She is a top student who is highly motivated to pursue challenging academics combined with terrific athletic opportunities as well. We are thrilled and excited to welcome Sofia to the Duke family.”

One of the top rebounders in the nation, Roma is coming off averaging 10.0 rebounds, 5.7 points and 2.1 blocks as a sophomore at Wagner. Her 10.0 rebounding average ranked 25th nationally and second in the Northeastern Conference.

Roma, who started 27-of-28 games, led the Northeastern Conference with an 11.2 per game average in 2015-16, while collecting 14 games with 10 or more rebounds. Her career-high 22 rebounds against Mount St. Mary’s was tied for the 14th-most in a single game in Division I this past season. Roma notched six double-doubles as a sophomore and swatted a career-high eight shots against Robert Morris.

As a freshman, Roma averaged 5.8 rebounds, 3.2 points and 1.0 blocks as a freshman at Wagner. She pulled down a then career-high 18 rebounds against Saint Francis.

Roma boasts extensive international experience as she was a member of the 2013 Central America U17 Team that competed in El Salvador. She also competed on the 2011 Puerto Rican National Team that played in the Mexico U16 Americas Tournament. Roma played at Nazareth Regional High School where she led her squad to a 21-7 record, its third straight Class “A” State Championship and a runner-up finish in the 2014 GCHSAA State Finale as a senior.
