Duke Track & Field: Blue Devils Primed for Duke Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. – As the championship portion of the 2016 outdoor season approaches, the Duke track & field program will host the Duke Invitational April 22-23 at Morris Williams Stadium as the penultimate regular season contest for the Blue Devils. The meet will mark the second and final home meet of the 2016 campaign for Duke, previously hosting Michigan and North Carolina for the inaugural Battle of the Blues earlier this month.

The Blue Devils seem to be hitting their stride as they look to carry momentum over from last week’s successful trip to California. Competing at both the Mt. SAC Relays and the Beach Invitational, Duke broke two school records and ultimately secured three ACC Performer of the Week honors during its West Coast trip.

Graduate student Shaun Thompson was named the ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week after jumping to the top of the NCAA Division I leaderboard in the men’s 10,000, running a 28:47.48 at the Mt. SAC Relays to break the 40-year old Duke record. In the women’s pole vault at the Mt. SAC Relays, senior Megan Clark, who was tabbed an ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week, reset her own outdoor school record in the event for the second time this month, clearing 14-11.00 (4.55m), the second-best vault in NCAA Division I this spring. At the Beach Invitational, redshirt senior Thomas Lang used a season-best throw of 237-2 (72.29m) in the men’s javelin to ultimately earn ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week honors. The mark currently ranks as the 17th-best distance among NCAA Division I throwers.

With two meets remaining before the ACC Outdoor Championships, Duke has produced 44 automatic-qualifying marks for the meet across 25 events. Additionally, the Blue Devils have combined for 23 performances that would currently qualify for the NCAA East Preliminary Championships.

Friday’s session will begin at noon with field events, followed by running events at 1 p.m. Action will resume Saturday again at noon with field events, with track events scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. With representatives from more than 40 clubs or universities signed up for the Duke Invitational, roughly 700 athletes will descend upon Morris Williams Stadium to compete Friday and Saturday.

With the Duke Invitational serving as the final home meet of the season, a Senior Day ceremony will be held Saturday at 7:10 p.m. to honor the Duke student-athletes.
